Mulled Wine – Campfire Edition

Cold nights and camping? You really only need two things: a crackling fire and something warm to sip. Sure, a cheeky splash of whisky hits the spot, but have you ever tried a hot, spiced wine under the stars? It's not quite a cocktail, but definitely classy enough to impress your camping crew. Bonus: you can use non-alcoholic wine if you're on early morning kid duty.

What You'll Need:

  • 1 lemon
  • 1 orange
  • 1 apple
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 4 cloves
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 bottle of red wine (something fruity like Cienna, or a mellow Shiraz if sweet stuff isn’t your thing)

How to Make It:

Grab a medium-sized pot (your camping one is perfect). Toss in the brown sugar, cinnamon, and cloves. Slice up the orange, lemon, and apple and throw them in too. Give the orange and lemon a little squeeze to get that juicy goodness in.

Now, pour in the whole bottle of wine. Yep, all of it. Give it a stir and you’re basically halfway there.

Put the pot on a very low heat—you want it to barely simmer, not bubble away. If you’re using something like the Jetboil Genesis Base Camp Stove, dial that flame right down. Give it a stir every now and then and let it gently infuse for about 40 minutes (longer’s fine too, no stress).

When you’re ready to serve, strain it through a little sieve into your cups to catch the bits. If you’re using glass, warm them up first so they don’t crack. We used insulated Camelbak mugs—no breakages and the mulled wine stayed toasty.

Feeling fancy? Pop a slice of fruit or a cinnamon stick into each cup. Done!

Warm, cozy, and just a little bit boujee. Perfect for chilly nights around the fire.
